The Ogun State Government has signed MoUs (Memoranda of Understanding) with DP World for the development of the Gateway Deep Seaport and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.

The agreements were signed in Paris, with President Bola Tinubu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and senior officials from DP World present.

DP World operates ports and logistics businesses across several countries and is expected to bring technical and investment experience to the projects.

The Federal Government says it will support the investment with clearer regulations and a more predictable business environment.

Why it matters

A functioning deep seaport could give businesses another route for importing and exporting goods and reduce some of the pressure on Nigeria’s existing ports.

The proposed economic zone could also attract manufacturers, logistics companies and other businesses around the port.

What this means for you

Nothing changes immediately.

The agreement is an important step, but a signed MoU does not mean the port is already built or operational.

If the project reaches construction and operation, its wider effects could include new jobs, more logistics activity and additional competition in Nigeria’s port system.
