Responsibilities of the office
The President heads the federal executive and is Commander-in-Chief. The office implements federal laws and directs federal administration, working through ministers and other public officers.
Executive powers remain subject to the Constitution, legislation and judicial review. The National Assembly has separate legislative and oversight responsibilities.
About Bola Ahmed Tinubu
Bola Ahmed Tinubu became President of Nigeria on 29 May 2023. Before that, he served as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. His professional background is in accounting, including work at Mobil Oil in Nigeria.
The presidency is the federal executive office. It is distinct from the National Assembly, which makes federal laws, and the courts, which exercise judicial power. A presidential announcement is not a substitute for legislation where the Constitution requires a law.
