Responsibilities of the office

Budgets and public money

Presents spending proposals to the House of Assembly. Public spending must follow the Constitution, appropriation laws and other applicable rules.

Executive appointments

Nominates commissioners for confirmation by the House of Assembly and assigns portfolios within the state executive.

Legislation

Considers bills passed by the House of Assembly for assent. The Constitution also provides a procedure for the Assembly to override withheld assent.

The governor is accountable under the Constitution. Courts and the legislature have separate powers. The office does not confer personal command of the armed forces or unlimited control over federal agencies and local councils.

About Monday Okpebholo

Monday Okpebholo is Governor of Edo State. He was sworn in on 12 November 2024 after winning the September 2024 governorship election.

Service in the Senate

Before becoming governor, Okpebholo represented Edo Central in the Senate. He entered the chamber in June 2023 and left for the governorship in November 2024. The Senate held a valedictory session for him in December 2024.

Taking office in Edo

Okpebholo took office alongside Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa. The state government’s account of his inauguration identifies five priorities: security, infrastructure, healthcare, food sufficiency and education. These are the administration’s stated commitments, whose delivery can be assessed against spending records and results.

Understanding his role

As senator, he participated in federal lawmaking and oversight. As governor, he leads Edo’s executive administration and is responsible for implementing policy through state institutions. Spending proposals still require legislative processes, and the courts remain separate from the executive.
