About Hyacinth Iormem Alia
Hyacinth Iormem Alia is Governor of Benue State. He took office on 29 May 2023 after a career in the Catholic priesthood.
Background and priesthood
Alia was born on 15 May 1966. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1990 by Bishop Athanasius Atule Usuh of Makurdi Catholic Diocese. His public profile before the governorship was rooted in religious service.
Election and public office
He won election as governor in 2023. The Presidency’s statement marking his 60th birthday in May 2026 confirms his continuing role in Benue’s administration. His authority as governor comes from the Constitution and the electoral mandate, separately from his religious vocation.
What his administration is responsible for
Benue’s government identifies agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare and education among its priorities. The governor sets executive policy and works through commissioners and public institutions to implement it. Whether programmes deliver their intended results can be assessed through budgets, project records, service outcomes and legislative scrutiny.
