Responsibilities of the office
Supporting Senate leadership
Assists the Senate President in the work of the chamber.
Presiding when required
The Constitution provides for the Deputy President to preside when the Senate President is absent. While in the chair, the deputy manages proceedings under the same parliamentary rules.
Lawmaking and oversight
Participates as a senator in consideration of bills, budgets and other business within the chamber’s powers.
Representation
Represents Kano North and brings constituency concerns into parliamentary work.
Limits

About Barau Jibrin
Barau Jibrin is Deputy President of the Senate and represents Kano North. The National Assembly directory lists him among the leadership of the 10th Assembly.
Professional background and public service
An accountant before his parliamentary career, Jibrin represented Tarauni Federal Constituency following the 1999 election. He also served in Kano State as Commissioner for Science and Technology and chairman of the state’s investment and property company.
Budget and parliamentary experience
He has chaired appropriations committees in both the House and Senate. Those committees examine spending proposals and related budget questions within the legislature’s wider responsibilities.
Current responsibilities
A June 2026 Presidency statement confirms his role as Deputy Senate President and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament. His national office involves assisting the Senate President and presiding when required by the chamber’s arrangements.
Why the distinction matters
Senators consider legislation and scrutinise government. They do not take over the day-to-day responsibilities of ministries or local councils. Constituency representation is part of the role, alongside national lawmaking.
